Taylor Swift: Marsha Blackburn’s voting record ‘appalls and terrifies me’

Little Taylor Not So Swift seems to be channeling the Ditsy(Dixie)Chicks with her uninformed dumb assed remarks.

Taylor Swift offered a rare political endorsement Sunday, voicing her support for Phil Bredesen, the Democratic Senate candidate in Tennessee, over Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

“As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me.”

Swift, in particular, cites Blackburn’s positions on women’s and LGBT rights. The award-winning artist also said she would cast a ballot for the Democratic incumbent in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, Rep. Jim Cooper.

In her post, Swift addressed criticism she has received for not mobilizing her fan base on political or social issues.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” Swift wrote.

“For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway,” she said. “So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count.”

Bredesen’s campaign was quick to embrace Swift’s comments, touting how the candidate was “resonating with Democrats, Independents, and Republicans throughout the state.”

“As a U.S. Senator, he will represent Tennesseans of all stripes,” the campaign said via a statement. “The choice continues to be clear: voters can either have more of the same old partisan shouting that’s coming out of D.C., or they can hire someone who has a track record of getting things done for Tennessee.”

Swift’s announcement Sunday coincides with a CBS News/YouGov poll that found Blackburn, currently a House lawmaker, has an 8 percentage point lead over Bredesen, a former governor, among likely voters. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
