Dick’s Sporting Goods reports $150 million in lost sales after halting assault-weapons sales

H/T Fox News.

I personally will not be sad to see Dick’s Sporting Goods store sent to the ash bin of history.

Dick’s Sporting Goods’ bottom line took a very big hit after halting the sale of assault-style weapons in response to the Parkland school massacre.

The policy change cost the nation’s largest sporting goods retailer about $150 million in lost sales, about 1.7 percent of annual revenue, Bloomberg News reported Friday.

But boss Ed Stack isn’t complaining.

“The system does not work,” Stack said, according to the news outlet. “It’s important that when you know there’s something that’s not working, and it’s to the detriment of the public, you have to stand up.”

Parkland gunman Nikolas Cruz purchased a shotgun from Dick’s a few months before the attack, which left 17 dead, including a number of students.

Stack also banned the sale of all guns to anyone under 21.

Still, the gun ban hasn’t affected Dick’s stock price, Bloomberg reported.

Shares have climbed 14 percent in the 13 months since Parkland. Shares rose slightly Friday.

After the ban was announced, the National Rifle Association criticized Stack’s “strange business model,” according to Bloomberg.

Also, the National Shooting Sports Foundation kicked Dick’s out of the organization. Gun manufacturers liked Mossberg stopped do business with Dick’s.

Those who supported the ban promised to become Dick’s customers but did not stay the course.

“Love is fleeting. Hate is forever,” Stack said.

If Trump Shuts Border & Builds Wall, NO Dem Can Beat Him in 2020, Claims Radio Host

H/T BarbWire.

Rush Limbaugh is spot on if President Trump shuts down the border and builds the wall he is a shoo-in for re-election in 2020.

The 2020 election is still a little over 2 years and 7 months away and yet Democrats are lining up for the chance to defeat the man who they believe is their worst enemy in years.

Trump already has the economy and jobs in his favor, but having the best record doesn’t necessarily equate to a victory as it did years ago.

So, what would it take for Trump to win re-election in 2020?

According to talk show host Rush Limbaugh, if Trump closed the US-Mexico border as he has threatened to do and build the border wall, that no Democrat could defeat him.

The National Sentinel – Limbaugh: If POTUS Trump shuts down the border, builds the wall, ‘no Dem can beat him in 2020’ – Talk radio giant Rush Limbaugh on Thursday discussed POTUS Donald Trump’s latest threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border in order to deal with rising numbers of illegal aliens who are stretching border and customs’ resources past the breaking point, noting that if he were to do that and build portions of a wall, he would become unbeatable next year.

In an interview with another talk show behemoth, Sean Hannity, on the latter’s Fox News program, Limbaugh said that the president has to “zero in on immigration,” despite POTUS’ desire for the “Republican Party to become known as the party of health care” instead, hitting on an issue near and dear to voters’ hearts in 2018.

“[Health care] is a tangible thing that really matters to every human being,” he said.

However, Limbaugh notes that Trump was elected primarily on a platform to build a border wall and to address illegal immigration and all of its ancillary issues like sanctuary cities, birthright citizenship, and so forth…

One way that would help Trump win is that it would prevent more illegal aliens from illegally voting in 2020, as Democrats want them to be able to.

If Trump really wants to secure re-election, he needs to launch an aggressive deportation program to deport as many of the 11-20 million illegals as possible.

One group claimed that at least 3 million illegals voted in 2016 and that most of them voted for Hillary Clinton.

I would start the deportations in California and Oregon, states with laws that registers illegals to vote.

Trump Pushes to Jump-Start Completion of Keystone Pipeline System First Proposed in 2005

H/T Breitbart.

Finishing the Keystone pipeline is just one more piece of the energy independence puzzle.

Fourteen years after TransCanada Corporation first proposed the construction of the Keystone Pipeline System to transport crude oil from Canada through points in the United States to the Gulf Coast, President Donald Trump issued a presidential permit on Friday in the hopes of finally getting the job-creating, energy-producing project finished.

Because the pipeline traverses an international border, the project has been under the jurisdiction of the U.S. State Department, which has issued several environmental impact statements, all of which concluded: “Keystone XL will have a limited effect on the environment.”

And although key portions of the pipeline have already been completed, the final construction of the Keystone XL part of the remaining pipeline has been held up in lawsuits brought by environmental activists and some Native American tribes.

President Donald Trump first issued a presidential permit to allow TransCanada to complete Keystone XL in March of 2017, which resulted in more lawsuits.

On Friday, Trump issued another presidential permit to replace the one issued two years ago, drawing the ire of critics of Keystone XL in particular and fossil fuels in general.

The Associated Press (AP) reported:

A federal judge blocked the project in November, saying the Trump administration had not fully considered potential oil spills and other impacts. U.S. District Judge Brian Morris ordered a new environmental review.

A White House spokesman said the new permit issued by Trump “dispels any uncertainty” about the project.

“Specifically, this permit reinforces, as should have been clear all along, that the presidential permit is indeed an exercise of presidential authority that is not subject to judicial review under the Administrative Procedure Act,” the spokesman said in the AP report.

The Environmental and Energy Law Program at Harvard University describes the current state of the pipeline project this way:

The Keystone XL pipeline is a proposed extension of the existing Keystone Pipeline System, which currently transports up to 600,000 barrels of oil per day between Canada and the US. The Keystone Pipeline System runs from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in Alberta to refineries in Illinois and Texas, and also to oil tank farms and an oil pipeline distribution center in Cushing, Oklahoma. TransCanada is the sole owner of both the Keystone Pipeline System and Keystone XL.

The Keystone XL pipeline would connect to the existing pipeline system to bring oil from Hardisty in Alberta, Canada directly to Steele City, Nebraska. It would run through Baker, Montana, where American-produced oil from the Bakken formation in Montana and North Dakota would be added to the pipeline. The proposed 875-mile route of Keystone XL would cross the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers.

The Keystone XL Pipeline has received all the necessary federal permits to complete the project, but it faces continuing litigation at the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana regarding the project’s compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Reaction to Trump’s move has been swift. TransCanada and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce praised the president.

“The president’s action today clarifies the national importance of Keystone XL and aims to bring more than ten years of environmental review to closure,” TransCanada said in a press release and statement.

“President Trump has been clear that he wants to create jobs and advance U.S. energy security and the Keystone XL pipeline does both of those things,” Russ Girling, TransCanada’s president and chief executive officer said. “We thank President Trump for his leadership and steadfast support to enable the advancement of this critical energy infrastructure project for North America.”

“The magnitude of the work on this project has been extensive,” Girling said. “The Keystone XL pipeline has been studied more than any other pipeline in history, and the environmental reviews are clear – the project can be built and operated in an environmentally sustainable and responsible way.”

“Keystone XL will create thousands of jobs and deliver economic benefits across North America while being the safest, most efficient and environmentally sound way to move crude oil to the U.S. Gulf Coast,” the TransCanada press release said.

“We’re pleased to see action that will help clear the way for development of the Keystone XL pipeline,” the Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “The Keystone XL pipeline is one of the most studied pieces of infrastructure in American history.”

“Over the course of a decade, it has been through five environmental reviews on the main route and an additional two on an alternative route,” the press release said. “As our president and CEO, Tom Donohue, recently said during recent Congressional testimony, ‘It shouldn’t take longer to approve a project than to build it.”

“Keystone XL is in our economic and energy security interests, and review after review have found that it can be built and operated in an environmentally responsible way,” the press release said. “It’s time to move forward.”

But environmental activists and their supporters are raising the same objections to the project. Now with Trump as president, the criticism is taking the shape of a personal attack.

Stephan Volker, a lawyer for environmental activists who sued to stop completion of the pipeline, called Trump’s move “illegal,” according to AP.

“By his action today in purporting to authorize construction” of the pipeline despite court rulings blocking it, “President Trump has launched a direct assault on our system of governance,” Volker said Friday in an email to AP.

Trump’s attempt to “overturn our system of checks and balances is nothing less than an attack on our Constitution. It must be defeated,” Volker said.

“Anthony Swift, director of the Canada project for the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, said the pipeline ‘was a bad idea from Day One, and it remains a terrible idea. If built, it would threaten our land, our drinking water, and our communities from Montana and Nebraska to the Gulf Coast. And it would drive dangerous climate change,’” AP reported.

Aside from the legal challenges, in 2015 President Barack Obama rejected the pipeline outright, saying it was not in the “national interest.”

Obama’s DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson Says ‘We Truly Are In A Crisis At The Border’

H/T Godfather Politics.

Even Jeh Johnson is smart enough to see there is a border crisis.

Obama’s DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson: ‘We are truly in a crisis‘ at the southern border.

“A little bit of context here. When I was in office in Kirstjen Nielsen’s job, at her desk, I’d get to work around 6:30 in the morning, and there would be my intelligence book sitting on my desk, the PDB, and also the apprehension numbers from the day before,” Johnson said during his appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“My staff would tell you if it was under 1,000 apprehension the day before, that was a relatively good number, and if it was above 1,000, it was a relatively bad number, and I was going to be in a bad mood the whole day.”

“On Tuesday there were 4,000 apprehensions. I know that a thousand overwhelms the system. I can’t imagine what 4,000 a day looks like. So, we are truly in a crisis,” he continued.

Washington Examiner:

Jeh Johnson, homeland security secretary during former President Barack Obama’s second term, declared Friday the southern border is in a “crisis” state, a claim the Trump administration first made late last year.

“We are truly in a crisis,” Johnson told MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski.

“On Tuesday there were 4,000 apprehensions. I know that 1,000 [apprehensions] overwhelms the system and I cannot begin to imagine what 4,000 a day looks like,” he said.

U.S. Border Patrol agents on the southwest border took more people into custody Monday than in any day in the past 10 years, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday.

Federal law enforcement agents made more than 3,700 apprehensions across California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas on Monday. More

Most of the Demoncrats are too stupid to know that there is truly a huge crisis at the border, but when you have a former Obama staff member saying that there is a crisis, you know that there is a real big crisis!

The Liberal Congress members, especially the House under Nancy Pelosi’s control “refuse to recognize a disaster which is taking place” and it will put America on that “deathbed” if it isn’t stopped.

Climate Shocker: NASA Finds Major Greenland Glacier Getting Bigger, Not Melting

H/T Godfather Politics.

This finding by NASA shoots the globull warming or climate change arguments right in the ass.

A key glacier in Greenland is growing again after shrinking for several years, according to NASA.

“The Jakobshavn (YA-cob-shawv-en) glacier around 2012 was retreating about 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) and thinning nearly 130 feet (almost 40 meters) annually,” the Associated Press reported. “But it started growing again at about the same rate in the past two years, according to a study in Monday’s Nature Geoscience. Study authors and outside scientists think this is temporary.”

“That was kind of a surprise. We kind of got used to a runaway system,” said Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland ice and climate scientist Jason Box, the AP noted. “The good news is that it’s a reminder that it’s not necessarily going that fast. But it is going.”

Box added, “arguably the most important Greenland glacier because it discharges the most ice in the northern hemisphere. For all of Greenland, it is king.”

Scientists say that the cooling in the North Atlantic waters caused the glacier to begin growing again.

“The water in Disko Bay, where Jakobshavn hits the ocean, is about 3.6 degrees cooler (2 degrees Celsius) than a few years ago, study authors said,” the AP added.

Naturally, all these scientists rushed to note that this “may” only be temporary, and that global warming will “likely” resume soon.

University of Washington ice scientist Ian Joughin insisted that global warming will resume soon enough, adding, “to a large extent, a temporary blip. Downturns do occur in the stock market, but overall the long-term trajectory is up. This is really the same thing.”

Of course.

In generations past people assumed that a drought was proof the gods didn’t like them. Now the same sort of people are bowing at the feet of the gods of global warming.

The truth is, they haven’t a clue why any of this happens. It just happens because weather changes.

But, isn’t it amusing that every thing they see that goes against their narrative is proof that… their narrative is still right?

It is far more proof that global warming is a religion, as opposed to science. Everything is “proof” of global warming.

Absolutely everything.

Murdering MLK’s Dream: Savannah’s Mayoral Race … Meeting Organizers Said ‘Black Reporters Only’

H/T Clash Daily.

Just think of the Hell that would be raised if a white candidate had said white reporters only.

The worst part of the story is just who it was that organized this obscenity!

A mayoral race in Savannah, Georgia is getting more attention to the rules around one speaking event than the candidates themselves are getting. That’s because the rules for attendance were explicitly racist.

But the candidate — and some elected officials, past and present — showed up anyway.

Imagine replacing the word ‘white’ everywhere that black appears in this story. Would any of the attendees have been given a pass for even attending such an event, let alone speaking there?

With signs stating “Black press only” on the doors of the church where the meeting was held, white reporters were barred from entry, while black reporters for at least two television stations were permitted inside.

…Former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson declined to comment before going inside, as did Chatham County Commissioner Chester Ellis.

“This is not my idea,” Ellis said.

Savannah Alderman Estella Shabazz, who also attended, said that she had once owned a newspaper and she was a member of the black press, but she declined to comment on the policy barring white reporters from going inside.

[Again, imagine what the news reports would look like if the word ‘black’ were replaced with ‘white’.]

Where’s Jim ‘Defender of the Free Press’ Acosta on this story? Or CNN’s media critic Brian Stelter?

Savannah Alderman Van Johnson, who is one of three African-Americans who have stated their intention to run for mayor, said afterwards that during the meeting he had talked about his vision for an inclusive and progressive Savannah. With regards to the discriminatory policy at the door, Johnson said he believed people have the right to assemble and determine the rules of their assembly.

“It’s not my meeting,” Johnson said. “I was asked to come and give a statement, so I came and I gave a statement. What I said in there, I’ll say out here.”

Louis Wilson, who said he is going to run for mayor again after an unsuccessful run in 2015, also spoke during the meeting about his priorities. Afterwards, Wilson also declined to discuss the press restriction.

“I didn’t plan the meeting so I can’t comment on that part,” he said. “I came to say what I had to say.”

That’s the funny thing about freedom of assembly — you absolutely have the right to set the rules of your own private meeting.

But never forget, that doesn’t absolve anyone of consequences. The rest of us have a right to an opinion about just what kind of a person participating in such a meeting makes you.

Our harshest criticism is reserved for the organizer:

With signs stating “Black press only” on the doors of the church where the meeting was held, white reporters were barred from entry, while black reporters for at least two television stations were permitted inside.

The event was coordinated by the Rev. Clarence Teddy Williams, owner of the consulting firm, The Trigon Group, who declined to discuss the entry policy.

A man calling himself a Christian preacher has created a racial criterion for participation in an event he has organized — and he has used a building consecrated to the worship of God to do so.

While it’s true that there are churches that tend to be racially monochromatic, that’s a weakness of the American Church, not a strength.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream that we would all be judged by the content of our character. He found that idea in the pages of Holy Scripture.

Gal 3:28 for example: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Or go to the Back of the Book, Revelation 7:9 “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

You can be politically divisive as a race-baiter, or you can be a faithful example of the Christian gospel.

You can’t be both. You’d think the MODERATOR of a missionary association that calls itself ‘Berean’ would know that. But judging by their profile pic…

…probably not.

And it would be interesting to see whether exclusion like this at a public event for those seeking public office is, in fact, compliant with election regulations.

Breaking! Federal Court Finds California Magazine Ban Violates the Second Amendment

H/T NRA-ILA.

This could be a big win for California gun owners if this ruling stands.

In one of the strongest judicial statements in favor of the Second Amendment to date, Judge Roger T. Benitez of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California determined on Friday that California’s ban on commonly possessed firearm magazines violates the Second Amendment.

The case is Duncan v. Becerra.

The NRA-supported case had already been up to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on the question of whether the law’s enforcement should be suspended during proceedings on its constitutionality. Last July, a three judge panel of the Ninth Circuit upheld Judge Benitez’s suspension of enforcement and sent the case back to him for further proceedings on the merits of the law itself.

Judge Benitez rendered his opinion late Friday afternoon and handed Second Amendment supporters a sweeping victory by completely invalidating California’s 10-round limit on magazine capacity. “Individual liberty and freedom are not outmoded concepts,” he declared.

In a scholarly and comprehensive opinion, Judge Benitez subjected the ban both to the constitutional analysis he argued was required by the U.S. Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller and a more complicated and flexible test the Ninth Circuit has applied in prior Second Amendment cases.

Either way, Judge Benitez ruled, the law would fail. Indeed, he characterized the California law as “turning the Constitution upside down.” He also systematically dismantled each of the state’s purported justifications for the law, demonstrating the factual and legal inconsistencies of their claims.

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox hailed the decision as a “huge win for gun owners” and a “landmark recognition of what courts have too often treated as a disfavored right.”

“Judge Benitez took the Second Amendment seriously and came to the conclusion required by the Constitution,” Cox said. “The same should be true of any court analyzing a ban on a class of arms law-abiding Americans commonly possess for self-defense or other lawful purposes.”

Unfortunately, Friday’s opinion is not likely to be the last word on the case. The state will likely appeal to the Ninth Circuit, which has proven notably hostile to the Second Amendment in past decisions.

Nevertheless, the thoroughness of Judge Benitez’s analysis should give Second Amendment supporters the best possible chance for success in appellate proceedings, particularly if the case ultimately lands before the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the meantime, Friday’s order prohibits California from enforcing its magazine restrictions, leaving its law-abiding residents safer and freer, at least for the time being.

Rahm Emanuel Blames ‘Toxic’ Trump for Jussie Smollett Hate Hoax

H/T Breitbart.

Only in the warped brain of the ballerina Rahm Deadfish Emanuel could such an idea be formed.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel blamed President Donald Trump in a press conference Thursday for the alleged hate hoax carried out by Empire Jussie Smollett, claiming that the president created a “toxic” and “vicious” cycle for which the star thought he could get away with the purportedly staged attack on himself.

“Look, I’ve always said from day one this is a Trump-free zone, the city of Chicago, and I mean it,” Emanuel told reporters. “Let me be really clear about something: The only reason Jussie Smollett thought he could take advantage of a hoax about a hate crime is for the environment, the toxic environment Donald Trump created.”

“This is a president who drew a moral equivalency between people who are trying to perpetuate bigotry and those who are trying to fight bigotry,” the mayor continued. “As somebody who started his own journey in politics fighting the neo-Nazis in Skokie and Marquette Park, President Trump should literally take his politics, move it aside.

Prosecutors infuriated Emanuel and the Chicago Police Department this week when they abruptly dropped 16 felony counts that accused Smollett of making a false police report about being the target of the attack.

Investigators believe Smollett, who is black and gay, hired two brothers to stage the January attack in downtown Chicago and that Smollett hoped the attention would help advance his career. Police also allege that before the attack, Smollett sent a letter threatening himself to the Chicago television studio where Empire is shot. Smollett has repeatedly said the two masked men shouted slurs, wrapped a rope around his neck and poured a substance on him. He also told detectives that the attackers yelled that he was in “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan, police said.

The mayor then accused the president of creating a “toxic, vicious cycle” wherein Smollett believed he could pull off the alleged racist and homophobic assault against himself. “The only reason Jussie Smollett thought he could get away with this hoax about a hate crime is because of the environment President Trump created,” Emanuel reaffirmed.

He then criticized the president’s response to the deadly Charlottesville protest in which he said there are “good people on both sides,” and suggested he not involve himself in the Smollett case.

Emanuel concluded his remarks by saying: “My recommendation to the president is good to opening day baseball, sit on the sideline, stay out of this. You created a toxic environment and all of us who are trying to make sure that we share a common set of values that embrace and welcome people of all walks of lives and backgrounds.”

The mayor’s remarks came as city officials ordered Smollett to pay $130,000 to cover the cost of the investigation into his report of a street attack that police say was staged.

letter from the city’s legal department to Smollett and his attorneys said that figure covers overtime worked by more than two dozen detectives and officers who spent weeks looking into Smollett’s claim, including reviewing video and physical evidence and conducting interviews.

Those resources, the letter said, “could have been used for other investigations.”

Hours earlier, President Trump tweeted that the FBI and the Department of Justice would review the “outrageous” case, calling it an “embarrassment” to the country.

The FBI, which is investigating that letter, has declined to comment.

Former DIA Officer Who Spied for China Hated Trump

H/T The Washington Free Beacon.

We need to go back to how we treated spies back on the day when they got a rope around their neck or stood in front of a firing squad.

Executing these bastards will make them think twice before they sell America out.

Court documents reveal Chinese intelligence targets.

A former Defense Intelligence Agency officer who spied for China worked secretly as a Beijing agent for five years and revealed in an intercepted phone call he was motivated in part by hatred for President Trump.

Ron Rockwell Hansen, a DIA operations officer until 2006, was arrested June 5 and pleaded guilty on Friday in Utah to attempting to sell national defense secrets to China. He faces 15 years in prison under a plea deal. Sentencing is set for Sept. 24.

Court documents in the case reveal Hansen was motivated by both money and an affinity for China. In seeking to recruit a DIA coworker as a fellow Chinese spy, he voiced fears that Trump would start a war and said that was a reason to cooperate secretly with several Chinese intelligence agencies or branches in providing information and trying to penetrate U.S. defense and intelligence agencies to obtain secrets.

Hansen admitted in the plea agreement he met frequently with Chinese intelligence agents beginning in early 2014.

“During those meetings, the agents described to me the type of information that would interest Chinese

Intelligence,” Hansen stated in the pleading. “During the course of my relationship with Chinese intelligence, I

received hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation for information I provided them, including information I gathered at various industry conferences.”

Hansen also agreed to disclose details of his contacts with Chinese intelligence as part of the plea deal. He also agreed to turn over all electronic devices, including laptop computers and flash drives.

U.S. Attorney for Utah John W. Huber said the case was damaging. The plea agreement convicted Hansen of the most serious charge in the original indictment, he said. Fourteen other counts will be dropped.

“A former United States intelligence officer engaged in a multi-year relationship with Chinese intelligence operatives where he sold them information they wanted,” Huber told the Washington Free Beacon. “That statement, in and of itself, helps us appreciate the damage that Hansen has caused.”

Huber said Hansen admitted that the military secrets he obtained were to be used to injure the United States and advantage a foreign power.

“What should be sacrosanct in our character as Americans is this: we do not betray our nation,” Huber said.

“This case illustrates that the People’s Republic of China has made a sophisticated and concerted effort to steal our nation’s secrets.”

The spy case is one of several recent failures related to U.S. intelligence in China. In June, former CIA officer Kevin Mallory was found guilty of espionage for selling secrets to China, and another former CIA officer, Jerry Chun Shing Lee, is facing espionage charges related to China.

Beginning in 2010, the CIA lost an estimated 30 recruited informants in China, including several who were imprisoned or killed.

Earlier in the case, an FBI criminal complaint disclosed that Chinese intelligence was ready pay Hansen for obtaining top-secret U.S. military war plans for China, as well as secrets on U.S. negotiations with North Korea and information on American government officials.

The Chinese would pay $200,000 for the military’s “China ops plan,” Hansen was quoted as saying, adding that he offered to assist a DIA official working as a confidential informant in laundering the money.

Hansen’s feelings for Trump were disclosed in a transcript of an electronically intercepted conversation on April 10, 2018, between Hansen, identified by his FBI code name “Gray Willow,” and the DIA case officer who was cooperating with authorities.

Hansen explained in the phone call why he was making a risky spying pitch to the officer who was not identified by name.

“The fact, because I hate Trump,” Hansen stated. “I know he wants to start a war somewhere. I don’t want you to die for no reason. That’s the only reason we’re having this conversation.”

Hansen then said if the DIA officer were paid $500,000, he also would make the same amount.

Asked by the officer if the promise of getting large sums of cash from notoriously stingy Chinese intelligence agencies was sincere, Hansen said, yes.

But he also issued a blunt warning that Chinese intelligence is prepared to kill those who work secretly for them.

“Just share one other thing in having worked very closely the Ministry of State Security, Ministry of Public Security, [Beijing State Security Bureau], they’ll kill you if you fuck them over. They are not above sending someone here to hunt you down and kill you,” Hansen said, adding that “you’ve seen with the Russians’ that’s pretty easy to do.”

Apparently referring to the Russian intelligence assassination in Britain of defector Alexander Litvinenko in 2006, and the attempted assassination of another defector Sergei Skripal in 2018, Hansen said the Russians were sloppy in assassination tradecraft.

“The Chinese are not like that,” he said. “You’ll just be [killed] in a car accident.”

Prosecutors say Hansen was paid $800,000 by the MSS and other Chinese spy units during 40 visits to China since 2013 and probably as early as 2007 during which time he met with and communicated regularly with MSS and Ministry of Public Security intelligence agents.

He used three different types of cell phones, including Chinese-made Xinda and Huawei devices, to communicate securely with his Chinese handlers.

Court documents in the case reveal Hansen was the son of a U.S. intelligence officer, Ray Hansen, and spoke fluent Chinese after spending time in Taiwan.

Hansen, a Utah resident, left DIA in December 2006 and lived in China beginning in 2007 where he worked at a company called H-11 Digital Forensics that was linked to Chinese intelligence. He also was a government contractor until 2011 and had access to U.S. defense secrets.

Beginning in 2012, Hansen tried to regain access to secrets by seeking employment at DIA and two other intelligence agencies, in one case offering to spy as a double agent for China—an indication that his ties to Chinese intelligence were known.

He also contacted a member of Congress on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and offered to work as a staff member in charge of intelligence issues.

The FBI missed the signs Hansen was a spy for two years and did not open its investigation of Hansen until 2014, waiting four more years before arresting him.

Hansen is not the first DIA official to spy for China. In 2006, DIA analyst Ron Montaperto pleaded guilty to illegally holding classified documents and as part of the plea admitted to passing classified DIA information to Chinese military intelligence officials during the 1980s.

Montaperto was a leader for pro-Chinese intelligence officials in U.S. government and in the academic community who believe China poses little or no threat to U.S. security.

Hansen retired from the Army as a warrant officer trained in signals and human intelligence. After retiring from DIA in 2006, he was hired by the agency as a civilian case officer in charge of running Chinese operations.

Hansen was initially charged with illegally selling export-restricted technology to China, including forensic software known as Sumuri Recon, that is used to intelligence and security operations. He also sold an embargoed Intella 100 software, another cyber forensic tool.

The intercepted conversations were submitted in court as part of prosecutors’ efforts to prevent Hansen from being released on bail. The conversations show Hansen had a plan to escape from the United States and travel to China using false identity documents he had obtained as a DIA case officer.

During one conversation, Hansen told a friend. “well, maybe I’ll just book myself a trip to China and disappear.”

Hansen also wrote a letter to his family that began “if you are reading this letter, then I am dead. Sorry about that.”

The letter outlines funeral arrangements, including hymns and music, and a biographical sketch to be spoken by one of his children.

Hansen was born on Sept. 5, 1959, to Ray and Veloy Hansen. He is the second oldest of 11 children. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in international business and political science.

Hansen said he served as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan as a young man, an experience that launched his interest in Taiwan and China.

In the bio, Hansen described himself as “a spy.”

“He was one of the most successful intelligence officers in the history of U.S. intelligence,” Hansen wrote of himself.

USA –-(Ammoland.com)- KYW 1060 News radio reports 03-15-19 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Police say a man is dead after being shot by the owner of the store he was trying to rob in West Philadelphia on Thursday night.

Philadelphia Police say a man in his 20s went into the store, at 54th Street and Wyalusing Avenue, wearing a ski mask and armed with a gun. The store owner was also armed with a gun, and he shot the masked man one time in the stomach.

The would-be robber left the store, and he was found by police in a car nearby. He was taken to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment but later died from the gunshot wound.

The store owner was not hurt, and police say they did take two guns from the scene, one which belonged to the attempted robber, the other to the store owner.

Comments:

Convenience stores, head shops, delis, anything open late are at constant threat from armed robbers. Most national chains do not allow their employees to be armed. They worry more about lawsuits then employees’ lives. Independent owners seem to think differently. Defending your family members and their livelihood is way more important than defending establishments owned by others. Hopefully, the store owner has another gun.
