If there were enough Republicans with a backbone these impeachment charges would be dismissed outright.
I want this impeachment theater to end. I want to shove it down the Democrats’ throats. I want to win. I want the Republican Senate to gut this whole charade. That will happen. There is no way the GOP Senate removes Trump from office. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that he has the votes to block anything Democrats propose for the trial when it begins. Yet, the president wants an outright dismissal. On that, there may be a problem in our backyard (via The Hill):
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) told reporters on Monday that the Senate Republican caucus doesn’t have the votes to dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Trump, who endorsed an “outright dismissal” over the weekend.
“I think our members generally are not interested in a motion to dismiss. … Certainly there aren’t 51 votes for a motion to dismiss,” Blunt, the No. 4 Senate Republican, told reporters after a closed-door leadership meeting.
Republicans have warned for months that they will not dismiss the two articles of impeachment against Trump, predicting a trial will end with votes on either acquitting or convicting him.
But Trump revived talk of trying to dismiss the articles over the weekend, saying the Senate was “giving credence” to the allegations against him by having a trial.
It’s frustrating. This should be over and done with quickly. There is no evidence for these impeachment charges. It’s a partisan nightmare. First, some alleged CIA whistleblower who is a registered Democrat and has worked with a 2020 candidate filed this complaint that President Trump threatened to withhold aid to Ukraine unless they opened a corruption probe into Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden. Daddy Biden was leading anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine when his son got that nice board position on energy company Burisma, without any prior experience in this field. Hunter was reportedly there to sell access to top Obama officials.
This so-called whistleblower contacted Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) staff prior to filing the report; Schiff is the starting QB on Trump’s impeachment and chair of the House Intelligence Committee. And he knew about this report’s contents and prepared to weaponize it. His hearings, as you remember, brought forward nothing damning. The same went for the House Judiciary Committee’s hearings. It was transparent. Well, all knew what was going on, but Democrats promised their base impeachment—and now they’ve done that in the House at the cost of Trump’s approval ratings going up, swing-state voters souring on this whole clown act, and pushing these key battleground states possibly further out of reach for Democrats come Election Day.
Trump won this fight. McConnell should take the knee and let the clock run out, but we have a vote tally problem. We’ll keep you updated.
